Lately… (the Summer Solstice Edition)

Posted on June 20, 2025June 26, 2025 by victoria

Now that we’re hurtling into the hellfire that is summer in North Carolina, I’m glad that I decided to extend my morning walks several weeks ago. My body has had time to get accustomed to the time and distance, which has made it possible for me to keep up my routine now that we’re getting into the heavy heat and humidity.

The sun rises behind the trees that surround a pond. The sky is various shades of yellow, orange, and grey.

My route is roughly 3.5 miles and I treat myself to a couple of hydration stops to enjoy my little sanctuary next to the brook and catch up on the latest gossip from my duck friends, who always swim across the pond to come and greet me. Also, meet my other new friend, Phranklin the Turtle.

This morning’s walk had an extra purpose. Every year, my company participates in the John Michael Morrison Memorial 5k. Since I’m not based in Texas, I participate in the virtual 5k run/walk. The Universe was also gracious enough to send me a refreshing, cool breeze, which was nice, because Fam, my KNEECAPS were getting sweaty!

I love my walks. I even crave them now, despite the less-than-ideal conditions (oh, how I miss getting to wear my hoodies on my morning walks 😂). I’m grateful that I get to have this time to move my body around every day and am damn proud of the way that I’ve been showing up for myself over the past six months, even though I am so NOT a morning person!

And the last couple of mornings, it’s been valuable time as I process the grief of losing a friend I’ve known since Grade Six to cancer. Debby was pretty much the only person from my grade/high school days that I’ve been in contact with. I’m grateful for the times we had together and very grateful that her earthly suffering is done. I’ll miss those random DMs and her sweet comments on my posts, but I have a feeling she’ll drop into a dream or two for a visit.

Anyway, here’s a magnolia for no good reason at all.
