Scene From A Lunchroom
I'm in the kitchen at work, picking through a bag of trail mix, selecting the pieces of dried fruit that I like. (The nuts in the mix always seem stale to me because they've absorbed moisture from the fruit despite the fact that it's "dried" fruit. But I digress.)
My boss: "It doesn't do any good; there's always way more of the ones you don't want in there."
Me: "Wow, in that one sentence, you've described my entire love life!"

Simon Sunday: A Classic Sunday Photo
Well, to be honest, I don't remember if I took this particular photo on a Sunday but what the heck, I love this photo. I have a hard time choosing a favourite photo from Simon's kittenhood but this certainly is a candidate. He was so tiny! This was a rare quiet moment where Chloe and Simon weren't rough housing. They used to crack me up with their games of "chasie" and wrestling. It's a shame that Billie didn't grow up in an atmosphere that allowed her to learn how to play with others. It makes her and Simon both miserable, sometimes: Simon gets frustrated that Billie won't play and Billie just hates being bothered. Which means I need to take up the slack more and engage Simon in some heavy-duty interactive play. I think we'll go do that right now.

Scene From An Evening Commute
Tourist/Day Tripper Dude: (after regaling his sons/nephews/whatever with stories of being on a boat and claiming to have watched a fighter jet crash into the Bay as it took off from the Alameda Navy Base some years ago) "Just look at all that land! They should develop it, like Blackhawk, and put, you know, a BIG golf course and a shopping center and lots of big homes on it!"
Me: "So that only rich people could afford it? Oh goody, we don't have enough of THAT in the Bay Area!"
Me: exit stage right to go to the lower deck while I could still resist my urge to make Tourist/Day Tripper Dude "go for a little swim".

Simon Sunday: Milestone
We marked a major milestone this week: I spent the first night ever away from Simon and Billie. I was only gone a little over 24 hours and I had arranged with friends to have them fed and visited in the morning (even though I knew Simon would hide in the bedroom for the duration of any visit), so I was confident they would be safe. But I still couldn't sleep very well without Simon purring and stretching his fuzzy belly up against me. I'd keep listening for his soft chirr as he wakes up and looks for me, or Billie's soft chatter in the morning, but I didn't hear any of it. So, yeah, I missed my furkids like crazy.
Billie took my brief absence in her stride. Actually, she probably enjoyed it because, when my friend visited the next morning and Simon hid, she had the WHOLE REST OF THE APARTMENT TO HERSELF. Therefore, she ate only a couple of bites, then ran around the apartment for the rest of the visit. Simon, on the other hand, was a bit more distressed. When I came home, it took him a couple of days to settle down and not need me to be with him every minute. He's more calm now and we've spent a lot of this weekend snuggling (owing largely to me being dead tired from the work week and from getting over a summer cold).
I need to get Simon (especially) and Billie used to Other People visiting them and I need to get used to sleeping alone because, at least for the next little while, I'll be shuttlng up and down the coast. And also I really could use a vacation.

Simon Sunday: We Iz Tired
Simon and Billie have reached Detente long enough that they can simultaneously cuddle with me this weekend while I try to deal with whatever the hell it is that has laid siege to my sinuses.
Evidently, it takes a great deal of hard work for them to NOT fight with each other; they're both zonked out.
