Such a nerd...
It was nice enough out Wednesday evening that I decided to sit on the outside deck on the ferry. A woman sat at the opposite end of the bench. She made a call on her mobile phone, then took out a large book (it looked like a textbook) and read it. Once we left the dock she must have caught a chill because she went inside. She left her gloves on the bench. I was too caught up in the scenery of San Francisco at dusk to notice, until one of the deck hands asked me if they were my gloves.
"Oh, no. They must belong to the woman who was sitting there a few minutes ago," I replied.
"Hmmm. Do you know what she looks like?" the nice deck hand asked me.
I scrunched my forehead trying to recall any details that might help him find her. "Uhhhhhhh. She had a big text book open on her lap!" was the best I could do.
The look on his face told me my observation was completely NOT helpful. I then offered that I thought she might have had on a light brown or antique white jacket. He poked his head inside, still looking perplexed.
I knew that if I saw the book I could point her out, so I went inside with him and scanned the upper deck. Up toward the front of the boat I spotted the textbook on the woman's lap.
"Oh! Just over there! I see her book. She's in the pink shirt!"
The very nice deck hand looked skeptical, but he humored me. As he walked toward the woman (in pink!) with the textbook, I returned to my seat outside.
A few minutes later, he brushed my shoulder and said, "That WAS her! Thanks for your help!"
If I'm ever witness to a crime, I hope SOMEONE involved in it is holding a book, or else I'll be utterly useless trying to pick the whodunit out of a line up.
